1998

* Thomas Savundra a Computer Science student, Suhan Shan a Business and Economics student, and a fellow classmate at York University decide to start a hosting company for small businesses
* The founders choose the name Netfirms because it embodies their mission to connect small businesses and the Internet (Internet + businesses = Netfirms)

1999

This is how Netfirms have turned Netfirms's philosophy into action:

Reducing energy consumption in our data centers

* Netfirms recently converted our data centers from Alternating Current (AC) to Direct Current (DC) power and we've already reduced our energy consumption by 25%. By the end of 2007, we aim to reduce our energy consumption by more than 45%.
* Direct DC deployments provide the highest levels of efficiency, yielding significant power savings for the data center.

Reducing unnecessary energy usage in our corporate offices

* Netfirms's corporate office is a Certified Go Green Building by the national BOMA Go Green Environmental Certification program. Netfirms received certification for conserving energy by minimizing decorative lighting and raising the air temperature in the building.

Reducing the number of computers and electronics we contribute to landfill sites

* At Netfirms, we know that computers and electronic equipment contain toxic substances that make their way into our environment when disposed of in landfill sites - that's why we recycle all of our obsolete computer and electronic components.

Reducing fuel emissions in the environment

* Netfirms make sure it's convenient for our employees to ride public transit to work. Our corporate office is located in the city core with a subway stop in the building.
